Scarfskerry Reefs is a challenging reef break that peels both left and right over a rock ledge. The reefs face northwest and are visible from the road, so you can eyeball them before committing. This is a demanding wave that tends to stay empty, and it suits experienced surfers only.
When It Works
The reefs draw swell from west through north, with a northwest (NW) swell the best match. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 3 m / 10 ft, and can be somewhat inconsistent, so it pays to catch it on the right day.
Wind and Tide
Look for a southeast (SE) offshore wind to clean things up. The reef breaks on mid to high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
Scarfskerry stays fairly quiet, but it is a wave for experts only. When the swell drops into the smaller northwest to north range, or the wind swings southerly, it is worth checking nearby The Haven or the triangular Kirk O'Tang instead.
Access
There is free roadside parking close by. Park considerately and take care not to block the farmers' gates.
