Sealion Cove surf guide

Sealion Cove, also known as Shelikof Bay or Port Mary, is a laid-back surf spot that’s perfect for beginners. It features a sandy beachbreak, making it a good place to learn the basics of surfing without dealing with rocky or gnarly terrain. The spot offers a welcoming vibe and is often less crowded than other local beaches, which is great for those looking to practice their skills.

This spot works best with west swells, but you can also catch some action with southwest and northwest swells. It handles swell sizes starting from about 2ft to 6ft (0.6m to 1.8m). The waves break over sand, forming both lefts and rights, which gives you a chance to ride in either direction. You’ll want to keep an eye on the wind; easterly winds are preferable here. The tide can vary, but low, mid, and high tides all offer decent conditions to surf, making it a versatile spot for your sessions.

Sealion Cove is definitely suited for beginners, so if you're just starting out or looking for a chill place to improve your skills, you’re in the right spot. The combination of the sandy bottom, suitable swell directions, and forgiving wave types makes it a solid option for those new to surfing.
