Overview
Shek O is a sand-bottomed beach break that offers up both lefts and rights, sitting just along from Big Wave Bay. It tends to give you a little more space and protection than its neighbour, and in bigger winter swells it can turn into a dumpy shorebreak.
When It Works
It draws swell from north through east, with northeast (NE) the best match. The break is usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft, so there's a fair range of workable size to play with. Consistency is on the patchy side, though, so it pays to time your session for the days it's actually on.
Wind and Tide
Look for northwest (NW) offshore wind to clean it up. It can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
Shek O is accessible enough for beginners, but the lineup gets busy when it's working. It can also get rippy and tends to close out fairly often, so pick your days and keep an eye on the water.
