Overview
Skirza is a classic left-hand reef point and the most northerly spot on this east-facing coast. Long lefts tour a bouldery, strata reef ledge, and when it turns on the point fires off fast, heavy, barreling walls that can peel for over two hundred meters. It is a serious wave breaking over rock and boulders, so it rewards commitment more than casual sessions.
When It Works
Skirza only wakes up when the north shore is maxing out in winter's big northerly and northeasterly storms, with December through February the prime window. It draws swell from northeast through southeast (NE-SE), and north (N) swell is the best match. On a northeast swell the wave breaks up into distinct sections, while a straighter southeast swell walls it up more cleanly.
The reef is usable from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft, roughly waist high to overhead. It can be inconsistent, and the consistent quality of nearby breaks means it is rarely surfed, but when the setup lines up it is genuinely excellent.
Wind and Tide
Look for northwest (NW) offshore wind to clean it up. The point works best around low tide, and a rising tide is generally the better call as it fills in.
Local Tips
This is an expert wave. The speed, the heavy sections, the rock and boulder bottom, and the remoteness all add up, and long paddles and strong rips make it hard work in bigger swells. Shortboards, fish, longboards, and bodyboards all suit it depending on the day. Watch for rocks and a tricky exit. Expect a fairly quiet lineup that can feel a little reserved, though the local vibe is friendly.
Access
There is only a tiny parking area at Freswick harbour, with free roadside parking, so park considerately in the village, you are virtually in someone's garden. Paddle out through the harbour.
