South Padre Island Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

South Padre Island sits three hours south of Corpus Christi, at the end of a long drive through the famous King Ranch. Cross the Queen Isabella Causeway and the clear blue water is a sharp contrast to the muddy stretches of the Upper Texas coastline. A shorter, deeper continental shelf gives the island the largest, most consistent, and best-shaped waves on the Texas coast. Most of the breaks are above-average beach breaks, each one usually known by the hotel or restaurant it sits in front of. It's also the well-known MTV spring break destination.

When It Works

This is a sand-bottomed beach break that peels both right and left, picking up almost any swell that comes through. It draws swell from east-northeast to south-southeast (ENE-SSE) and is usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.1 m / 7 ft. Spring and autumn are the standout seasons, and the waves stay reliably consistent. You can go hunting for good sandbars and score them to yourself, or head south to Isla Blanca Park for the best surf on the island, along with the crowds that come with it.

Wind and Tide

Look for west-northwest (WNW) offshore wind, with a workable wind window running from west to north-northwest (W-NNW). Light winds are what make this place sing, so hope for a calm forecast. It breaks across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.

Local Tips

The waves suit everyone from beginners to experts, and you'll see shortboards, funboards, longboards, and fish all in the water. The lineup stays fairly quiet and surfers tend to spread out along the sandbars, though it bunches up near the jetty. Consistently strong longshore currents make drift sessions the natural call, so plan to walk back up the beach. Keep an eye out for spring breakers when the season's on.

Access

Getting in is easy. Find parking and walk through the nearest beach access point.
