Overview
Spoutnik is a left-hand reef break that peels over an uneven reef at the far end of Santa Maria and Fragata beaches.
When It Works
The break draws swell from southwest through north to northeast, and lines up best on a southwest (SW) swell. It is usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft. Timing it can take patience, though: the northeast trade wind blows persistently here, but on the rare occasion it eases, the northeast wind swell can clean up into long lefts well worth the check.
Wind and Tide
The offshore wind blows from the northeast (NE). It can work across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
