Overview
Steps is a right-hand reef break that peels over a rock ledge. Once you negotiate the rapid drop take-off, the wave walls up and often stays overfed all the way to the channel, which makes it a favourite with cruisers who would rather not take on the crowds nearby. From the car park lookouts it tends to look smaller than it really is, so it is usually a bit better than expected once you are down at the water. Further out sits the more challenging Evo's, which shifts across the shallow shelf at speed and squeezes off the odd barrel, while Sparrows, on the inside, breaks over another patch of uneven shelf and can turn into the best barrel of the lot in small-to-medium southwest swells and north winds.
When It Works
Steps draws swell from south through southwest, with southwest (SW) the best match. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 3 m / 10 ft and is moderately consistent, so expect worthwhile windows rather than surf on every check.
Wind and Tide
Look for a northwest (NW) offshore wind. All three breaks here need mid to high tides to break safely, and a rising tide is generally the better call.
Local Tips
This one suits intermediate surfers who want a rippable wall without too much drama. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it is on.
Access
There is a car park with free parking and lookouts above the break. Getting in and out over the shelf needs care at high tide, and reaching the steps can be tricky once there is some size.
