Streedagh Strand Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Streedagh Strand is a long sand beach break, with the strand running east from the access point and peaks scattered all the way down its length. It picks up both rights and lefts, and the sandy bottom and forgiving setup suit beginners and improving intermediates. At the far end of the strand sit the ruins of a 14th century Spanish Armada ship, still mostly buried and visible only at very low tide.

When It Works

The beach draws swell from west to northwest and works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 1.5 m / 5 ft, roughly waist to head high. Anything bigger and it starts to close out. It needs a decent swell to break at all, so autumn, winter and spring are the seasons to watch, and it turns consistent once winter arrives. The sandbars are rarely perfectly shaped, so quality varies, but it stays a dependable option when there is swell in the water.

Wind and Tide

Look for east-southeast offshore wind, with a workable wind window running from east to south-southeast. The strand also sits well protected from the prevailing southwest wind. Mid and high tide are the ones to aim for, and a rising tide is generally the better call.

Local Tips

Fish, funboards and longboards all work well here. The lineup tends to be fairly quiet and can feel a little reserved, though the beach is big enough that peaks spread down the whole strand. Keep an eye on rips once the swell picks up.

Access

Park in the lot and walk over the dunes along the access trail. The paddle out is short, straight off the beach. Water quality is generally very good, with some agricultural runoff at the far end of the strand near the river.
