Overview
Strickland Bay is the most consistent break on Rottnest Island and the standout among its reefs. Waves peel over a shallow rock ledge, with superb lefts running up to 12 ft (4 m) and a lock-in tube section at the end. Smaller swells bring decent rights as well.
When It Works
The reef draws swell from south through southwest (S-SW), with southwest (SW) the best match. It's usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft and breaks consistently.
Wind and Tide
Look for northwest (NW) offshore wind. It comes in on low and mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
Strickland suits intermediate surfers and isn't a spot for beginners. It's less intense than the island's other reefs, and defined channels let less confident surfers get out to the lineup and pick off a few, which is part of why it draws a crowd. Expect a busy lineup when it's working. The reef is sharp, so booties make it easier to handle.
Access
Rottnest is car-free, so bikes are the only way around, and surfers pedal straight to Strickland. There's camping in the area, and parking is restricted.
