Overview
Suicide Cliffs is a reef break that peels both left and right over live coral, and it ranks as the most consistent summer spot in the area. It sits in a wild setting with a name tied to WWII events, and the waves come in as scattered, punchy peaks that reward experienced surfers.
When It Works
The reef draws swell from northeast through east-southeast to south (NE-ESE-S), with southeast (SE) the best match. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft, and it holds its shape consistently when the swell lines up. Summer is when it fires most reliably.
Wind and Tide
Look for northwest (NW) offshore wind to clean up the peaks. It breaks on mid to high tide, and a rising tide is generally the better call, with higher tides producing more makeable waves.
Local Tips
This is an expert-level wave, best suited to confident surfers comfortable over sharp reef. Sitting close to Naha, it pulls the biggest crowds in the area, so expect a busy lineup when it works.
Access
Getting out takes a long traverse over sharp reef, and the cliff access turns tricky when it is wet. The outfall pipe can make the walk easier, but booties are still a good idea. There is a car park with free parking, plus roadside parking nearby.
