Overview
Sumiyoshi is a heavy reefbreak off Sumiyoshi Port, peeling both left and right over an uneven reef. It has a reputation for big, hollow tubes and can hold some of the biggest swells that roll through. This is an experts-only wave: the inside gets very shallow, so a wipe-out here can be genuinely dangerous.
When It Works
The reef pulls in swell from southwest through northwest, and it lines up best on a southwest swell. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, so it wants a bit of size to break properly. Consistency can be hit or miss, but the right window delivers the tubes it's known for.
Wind and Tide
Look for a northeast offshore wind to groom the peaks. It can work through most of the tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
Sumiyoshi is strictly a wave for expert surfers, given the shallow reef and the size it holds. The lineup usually stays fairly quiet.
Access
Paddle out from the harbour wall. There's a car park with free parking, along with roadside parking nearby.
