Tanjung Padang is a long, fast right-hander running over live coral reef, with a deep-water channel alongside it. The wave sets up in stages: at low tide the rights start close to a large sail-like rock, then travel across a long expanse of reef before backing off into the channel and spinning down a faster inside section. The setting is pure and pristine.
When It Works
Swell arrives from northwest to northeast, and the spot is usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3 m / 10 ft. Size and swell direction decide whether that long middle stretch of reef lines up or closes out, so pay attention to both before paddling out. Consistency is moderate, so it takes some patience to catch it on.
Wind and Tide
Look for southeast offshore wind. It can work through most of the tide, with a rising tide generally the better call. Low tide is when the rights start from the sail-like rock at the top of the reef.
Local Tips
This one suits intermediate surfers who are comfortable over live coral. The lineup stays quiet. Reef sharks patrol the drop-off zone at the point, which is also a great spot for spear-fishing. Nearby, the village at Hapo has some rights of its own, though a tanker on the reef at the mouth of the bay destroyed a decent left there.
