Surfing in North Maluku

Surfing in North Maluku means chasing reef waves scattered across the islands of Indonesia's far northeast, where the lineups face open water and light up when swell arrives from the northern to eastern quarter. This is a reef-dominated region rather than a beach-break coastline, so almost every wave here breaks over coral, and the setup rewards surfers who are comfortable reading a reef and timing their sessions.

The waves work best on swell out of the northeast, north, and north-northeast, with plenty of spots also picking up east and east-northeast energy. That northern-to-eastern window is the defining feature of the coastline, and a handful of breaks will also take a more north-northwest angle when the swell swings around. Winds are cleanest from the southern side of the compass, most often southeast or southwest, so mornings and any day with an offshore breeze off the land tend to hold the best shape.

Most of these reefs are forgiving on the tide, working through high and mid, and many still break cleanly at low, which gives you a wide daily window to find something rideable. The bulk of the coral here is live reef, with a few dead-coral and uneven sections mixed in, so booties and caution over shallow sections are worth keeping in mind. Waves start showing at around 2 ft and the region has a strong appetite for size, with plenty of spots holding up into the 8 to 10 ft range, so it handles solid swells as readily as smaller ones.

North Maluku leans toward experienced surfers. Expert-level reef waves outnumber the rest, with a middle tier of intermediate spots and only a couple of gentler options, so this is a region that suits confident intermediates and advanced surfers more than first-timers. That said, the sheer number of reefs across the islands means there is real variety once you start exploring.

The breaks cluster around small coastal towns, with the best-known concentrations near Padangi, Rotong, Sopi, and Supu, and further waves scattered around villages like Laumadoro. Notable spots include Coconut Swing, Double Dome, and Heavy's, names that hint at the punchy, reef-driven character of the area. For most surfers the practical approach is to base yourself near one of these towns, watch for a northern or eastern swell lining up with a southerly wind, and pick your reef to match the size and your ability on the day.
