Overview
Tarcoola is the go-to beachbreak along the Back Beach stretch, the spot locals fall back on when conditions don't suit the nearby reefs. Waves break over a mix of uneven reef and sand and peel both left and right. Shape is the main catch here: sloppy close-outs and little form are the norm, but the beach can occasionally turn on fast walls, with some sucky shorebreak further down. The setup also offers handy protection from northerlies.
When It Works
The beach draws swell from south through west, with southwest (SW) the direction that lines it up best. It works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, covering everything from small days to solid, punchy surf. One thing in its favour is reliability, as it stays consistent and tends to have rideable waves on offer more often than not.
Wind and Tide
Look for northeast (NE) offshore wind to clean up the faces. The bank works across low, mid, and high water, so you can surf it through most of the tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is an approachable, beginner-friendly wave, which is a big part of why it draws a crowd. Expect a busy lineup when it's on, shared by all kinds of craft and ability levels, so pick your peaks and be ready for company.
Access
Facilities are well sorted, with restrooms, showers, a lifeguard, a surf school, and a surf shop close at hand. Parking is easy too, thanks to a car park with free parking plus roadside spots.
