Overview
Tathra Beach is a standard beachbreak that peels over sand, offering up both lefts and rights. Up at The Pole the bank can turn fast and hollow, giving the beach a punchier option when it's really firing.
When It Works
This is more of a summer wave, drawing swell from the northeast through to the southeast (NE-SE), with northeast the direction to look for. It works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 3 m / 10 ft and is only moderately consistent, so it pays to time your session with the right pulse.
Wind and Tide
Look for a west offshore wind to clean it up. The bank breaks through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
Tathra is a friendly beginner beachbreak, but it has enough range to keep all abilities entertained, and it counts local pro Kai Otton among those who surf it. Expect a moderately busy lineup, and note that it fills up over the summer holidays when Victorian visitors roll in. If you're after emptier waves, there are options to the south at Wallagoot and Tura and to the north in Mimosa Rocks National Park.
Access
There's plenty on hand here: restrooms, showers, camping, a surf school, and lifeguard cover. Parking is easy too, with a car park offering free spaces alongside paid and roadside options.
