Terra Mar Surf Forecast Guide

Terra Mar is a fickle beach break in San Diego County that is easy to overlook, but times right into a genuine local gem when a proper groundswell shows up. It breaks over a mix of boulders and sand, with lefts off the north end and rights off the south, so there is usually a peak to pick from. The wave itself runs fat and slow, holding size but lacking real power, which keeps it forgiving when it is small.

When It Works

The break draws swell from south through west-southwest to northwest (S-WSW-NW), and is especially worth checking on a strong west-southwest swell or during clean winter conditions. It sees waves through the whole year, with summer south swells and rolling northwest swells in winter. It is usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft. Consistency is the catch: it can be inconsistent and often needs a solid swell to really turn on, but the good windows are worth timing.

Wind and Tide

Look for northeast (NE) offshore wind to clean it up. Tide is the key variable here: mid tide is the call, with a rising tide generally the better bet. Too much water and refraction off the cliffs takes over; too little and it starts to close out.

Local Tips

Terra Mar suits beginners and shortboards. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it is on, with a somewhat reserved feel in the water. It stays quiet much of the time, but the better the surf gets, the more talent turns up and the more competition there is for waves.

Access

Access is off Highway 101, just south of Cannon Road. Park in the dirt on the ocean side of 101 and walk down the path, though public parking is limited in the surrounding residential community. Keep an eye out for rocks, stingrays, and rip currents, and stay out of the water after heavy rain when quality drops.
