Overview
Terreiro is a high-performance right-hander breaking over boulders, with plenty of steep face to work with. Depending on the tide, rocks can pop up in the face, so the ride can turn sectiony. It's the only reliable spot on the south coast, which keeps it on the radar even though it can be inconsistent.
When It Works
The reef draws swell from south to west (S-W) and catches all south swells, but it lines up best on a west (W) swell that wraps in. It's usable from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 3 m / 10 ft.
Wind and Tide
Look for northwest (NW) offshore wind. Terreiro can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
Terreiro suits intermediate surfers. Expect a busy lineup with a bit of localism when it's on, partly because it's inconsistent and the only dependable option on the south coast.
Access
The inside is loaded with construction leftovers, broken bottles, wood with nails, and steel beams, so booties are worth it. Watch for man-o-war and urchins too, along with rusty nails, steel bars, construction rubbish, and some residential pollution from Sao Mateus da Calheta. There's free roadside parking.
