Overview
Thailand is a left-hand reefbreak on the southeast tip of Simeulue, breaking over live coral. Despite the name, this is an Indonesian reef rather than a spot in Thailand. It's the easier, more approachable option here, with a steep drop and plenty of shoulder to open up for cutbacks. Just to the east there's a heavier, shallow, fast right for anyone chasing more punch, and the potential for good surf runs for miles up the coast through indented bays, scraggy reefs, and volcanic sand beachbreaks. Getting to it is the catch: the weather can turn treacherous and the lack of safe anchorages makes navigation genuinely tricky.
When It Works
The reef draws swell from south through west, with southwest swell the best match. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 3 m / 10 ft, and consistency is moderate, so you'll get rideable windows without it firing every day.
Wind and Tide
Look for northwest offshore wind to clean up the wall. The reef can work through most of the tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
The manageable drop and open shoulder make this a solid pick for intermediate surfers. Expect a fairly quiet lineup when it's working.
