Overview
Thalia Street is one of Laguna Beach's most dependable waves, a go-to for local surfers for generations. It breaks over sand with rock reef outcroppings that help break things up and let the wave stand up on lower tides. Most days it hovers between flat and ribcage-high, cruisey and fun when it's small, but it can hold overhead surf when it's really pumping. Timing is everything here, since the scattered rocks and reef shift the wave depending on tide, swell direction, and interval. That delicate dance costs a few fins now and then, but it's part of what makes the wave fun and interesting.
When It Works
The spot draws swell from south-southeast through south to west, with south swell the most dependable, especially the summer south swells that Laguna leans on. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, typically running waist to head-high. Summer is the season to target. The area can go flat for weeks in winter as Newport Beach, Huntington Beach, Catalina, and other offshore islands shadow the swell. Compared to the more obscure nooks around Laguna, Thalia Street is a relatively reliable bet.
Wind and Tide
Look for a northeast offshore wind, with a workable window running from north through east-northeast to east-southeast. Tide is the make-or-break factor here: mid tide is best, and a rising tide is generally the better call. When it's too low the rocks become an issue, and when it's too high the wave bogs down, so the window as the tide fills in or pushes out offers up the most.

Thalia Street suits everyone from beginners to experts, and it handles a range of boards well, from shortboards and fish to funboards and longboards. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it works, busier through summer as beginners and tourists flood in. The atmosphere stays somewhat reserved and cruisey, with locals coming into their own when the surf starts pumping and its unpredictable quirks reward local knowledge.
