Overview
The Bluff, also known as Alexandra Headland, is a fat and forgiving right-hand point that breaks over uneven reef and sand. In small swells it fills up with longboarders in the water and tourists on the beach. There are more rights on the inside at the Corner as the point runs into the beachbreak lefts.
When It Works
The point picks up swell from northeast to southeast (NE-SE), and southeast (SE) is the best direction. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 3 m / 10 ft and is moderately consistent. A bigger swell from the south puts more power into the walls and stirs up more rips, though it stays a fairly benign wave.
Wind and Tide
Look for a southwest (SW) offshore wind. The point can break through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is a mellow, forgiving wave that suits beginners. Expect a busy lineup when it works, and the local longboard crew tend to sit on the better sets, but the overall vibe stays fairly relaxed.
Access
Facilities are well covered, with restrooms, showers, camping, a lifeguard, a surf school, and a surf shop. For parking, there's a car park with free parking alongside paid and roadside options.
