Overview
The Castle is a sand-bottomed break that serves up fat, mushy longboard waves spread across a wide area. The pier here once held a bar and surf shack before it was turned into a Disney-style attraction, which later burnt down to the waterline; what remains today is little more than stumps.
When It Works
The Castle draws a wide swell window, pulling in swell from northeast through east-southeast to south, with northeast the best match. Both lefts and rights break here, and the lefts really come into their own on a nor'easter. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3 m / 10 ft and tends to be moderately consistent.
Wind and Tide
Look for northwest offshore wind. The break works through most of the tide, though a rising tide is generally the better call, and the lefts are at their best from mid to high tide.
Local Tips
This is a forgiving, beginner-friendly spot, and the lineup usually stays fairly quiet. Be ready for squadrons of giant greenhead flies, and keep an eye out for submerged objects like burned-out pilings.
