The Fence Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

The Fence sits at the far end of Kings Beach, where the sand meets a long harbour wall. That wall reflects incoming swell back at just the right angle to wedge up hollow peaks, and it can get insanely hollow when everything lines up. It's a sand-bottom beach break that throws up both lefts and rights.

When It Works

The Fence draws swell from southwest through north to northeast (SW-N-NE), and it fires best on a southeast (SE) swell. It's usable from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft: bigger southwest or moderate northeast-to-southeast swells serve up meaty barrels, while slightly smaller days leave a fun, smashable wall to lay into. It's a consistent setup overall.

Wind and Tide

Look for a west (W) offshore wind to groom it. The Fence favours high tide, and a rising tide is generally the better call.

Local Tips

This is an expert wave. The wedging peaks are tricky, and reading which ones will get the perfect bounce off the wall takes time to figure out. Expect a busy lineup when it's on, with a committed bodyboarding crew who can be protective of the peak.

Access

Park at the waterslide and walk up Kings Beach, since the harbour docks with their trains and cranes make that stretch a dodgy place to leave a car. Kings Beach itself can turn on some decent waves too, especially at lower tides when the Fence isn't working. Facilities are solid, with restrooms, showers, camping, a lifeguard, a surf school and a surf shop close by. For parking you've got a car park with free parking alongside paid, roadside and restricted options.
