Overview
The Hoek is a world-class, tubey A-frame tucked beneath the cliffs of Chapman's Peak Drive. It breaks over a mix of uneven reef and sand, throwing short, crystalline barrels, with the bounce off the rocks and ever-shifting sands deciding which peak serves up the best air drop before the wave shuts down in the shallows. It peels both left and right off the same peak.
When It Works
The Hoek lights up on a small to medium swell, and it draws anything from south to west (S-W), with a west (W) swell the best match. It is usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft and is moderately consistent. Spring through autumn is the season to catch it, though the upwelling keeps the water cold.
Wind and Tide
It needs a clean southeast (SE) offshore wind to groom the peaks. The reef works on low and mid tide, with a rising tide the better call, and it stops working once the tide pushes past mid.
Local Tips
This is an expert's wave, demanding a confident late drop into shallow barrels. Expect a very busy lineup when it turns on, with crowds descending through the spring-to-autumn season.
