Overview
The Wharf (Savai'i) is a right-hand reef break off Salelologa, on the channel between Samoa's two main islands. It breaks over live coral along an extensive fringing reef that sits about a kilometre offshore and curves away to the north.
When It Works
Expect clean rights when a moderate south-to-southeast swell is running. The reef draws swell from southwest through southeast, with south swell the best match, and it is usable from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft. Consistency is moderate, so you may need to time your window, but the same fringing reef also picks up Northern Hemisphere winter swells from the northwest through northeast between November and April.
Wind and Tide
Look for west offshore wind to clean things up; any east wind blows straight onshore and shuts it down. The wave works best on mid to high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This one suits intermediate surfers, and you can expect a moderately busy lineup when it is working.
Access
Aganoa surf camp reaches the bends, corners, and passes of the reef by boat, most often surfing Blue Pools, a shapely left that comes to life on bigger swell.
