Three's and Four's are a pair of right-hand reef breaks in Waikiki that share a stretch of live coral reef. Three's is usually the pick of the two: it turns on with clean, racy righthanders that can barrel through some hollow sections before running into a deep channel at the wave's end, which makes for an easy paddle back to the lineup. Four's, just along the reef, is more sectiony and offers some easier lefts peeling toward Kaisers.
When It Works
The reef draws swell from southwest through southeast, but it comes to life best on a solid south to southwest swell. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 3 m / 10 ft, holding size from head high up to a couple of feet overhead. It's moderately consistent and best from spring through autumn, with the main season running roughly April through October. On the right day it's a decent, rippable wall; when a bigger swell is running it can really turn on.
Wind and Tide
Look for northeast offshore wind, though calm mornings or anything with an offshore component from the northwest through to the east will keep it clean. It can work through most of the tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This one suits intermediate surfers and rewards a bit of experience once the swell picks up. It's a versatile wave that takes everything from shortboards and fish to funboards, longboards, and bodyboards. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it works, with a somewhat reserved atmosphere, so a little humility and respect go a long way. Keep an eye on the reef and currents.
Access
Three's and Four's sit in front of the Sheraton Waikiki Hotel, between Pops and Four's. There's a fair paddle out from the beach, though it's not bad once you're outside. Onshore you'll find restrooms, showers, a lifeguard, a surf school, and a surf shop. Parking options include metered and roadside spots as well as a car park, though some parking is paid or restricted.
