Toauri Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Toauri is a classic left that breaks over live coral on Raiatea, the largest island and administrative centre of the Leeward Islands, about 220 km (138 mi) northwest of Tahiti. Once known as Havaii, Raiatea is considered the original homeland of the Maohi and was a centre of religion and culture a thousand years ago, something you can still read in its many marae. The surf here is remote, and quality leans heavily on swell direction and wind exposure.

When It Works

Toauri draws swell from southwest through northwest, and a southwest (SW) swell is the best match. It comes to life on the smaller southwest swells and is usable from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft.

Wind and Tide

Look for a northeast (NE) offshore wind to clean things up. The reef can work through most of the tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.

Local Tips

There can be some localism in the lineup, so paddle out respectful and read the vibe before pushing for waves.
