Tolaga Bay is a mostly average beachbreak, but the rivermouth bar is what makes the trip worthwhile. When the sandbar is working it can get hollow, throwing up a long right and a shorter left off the mouth. It breaks over sand and rates as a decent spot when the setup lines up.
When It Works
The bar draws swell from northeast through southeast, with an east (E) swell the best match. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3 m / 10 ft, giving a wide window before it turns too small or too big. Consistency is moderate, so it won't fire every day, but the good sessions are worth timing.
Wind and Tide
Look for a west (W) offshore wind to clean it up. The bar can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is an intermediate wave, best suited to surfers comfortable reading a shifting rivermouth bar. The lineup stays fairly quiet, so you shouldn't have to scrap for waves. In bigger swells, use the 600m wharf to help you get out back.
Access
From Gisborne, head east on Wainui Road (State Highway 35) and continue north to Tolaga Bay, then turn right onto Solander Street and follow it down to the beach. There's a car park with free parking plus roadside parking, and you'll find restrooms and camping nearby.
