Topanga State Beach is a long right-hand point at the base of Topanga Canyon, breaking over boulders and sand near Topanga Creek. It's a genuinely workable wave with plenty of challenging sections, though it never quite matches the shape of nearby Malibu. The outer section, known as Boomers, is shorter but more powerful than the main wave, and on a solid day the point can handle size up to double overhead.
When It Works
The point draws swell from south through west, and a big west (W) swell brings out its best shape. It works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft, and comes into its own through autumn and winter. Consistency is moderate rather than reliable, but when the setup lines up it earns its good reputation. Because it takes plenty of swell to get going, the paddle and shoulder burn stay low once you're clear of the pack.
Wind and Tide
Look for a north (N) offshore wind to clean it up. The point works on low and mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is an intermediate-friendly right that suits just about any board, from shortboards and fish to funboards, longboards, and bodyboards. Expect a busy lineup when it's working, with a neutral atmosphere in the water.
Access
A large paid car park sits right above the break, so you can check it before paddling out. Restrooms, showers, a lifeguard, and a surf shop are all on hand.
