Overview
Toro de Oro is a right-hand point that peels over a mix of uneven reef and sand. It serves up fast, long rides that only the best surfers will make clean, though from the side it can look deceptively inviting. When it comes together, the wave breaks consistently.
When It Works
The point draws swell from south through southwest, with southwest (SW) the best match. A touch of west in the swell helps too, keeping the wave from sectioning off toward the rocks. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 4.6 m / 15 ft.
Wind and Tide
Look for north (N) offshore wind. The point can work through most of the tide, with a rising tide generally the better call. Higher water also helps cover some of the rocks below the surface.
Local Tips
This is an experts-only wave, built for confident surfers who can handle a fast, demanding point and stay off the rocks. Expect a fairly quiet lineup when it's on.
Access
Toro de Oro is best reached by boat, thanks to a rugged volcanic rock shoreline that makes paddling out from the beach a tough proposition.
