Torquay Backbeach surf guide

Torquay Backbeach is a southeast-facing beach that provides a good spot for surfers of all levels, especially beginners. It's known for its easy, rolling waves that make it a popular choice when the conditions are right. The beach can get pretty crowded during summer, as many surfers flock here to enjoy the surf scene. The southern end has some rocky formations, including a point called Drainoes, which can sometimes change things up for the surfers.

The surf here works best with a southwest swell, but it can handle swell from the southeast as well. It can pick up swell sizes around 2 feet (about 0.6 meters) and breaks over uneven reef and sand, creating both left and right waves. For the best experience, the preferable wind direction is northwest, and you'll find that the surf is more consistent around low to mid tide. It's a great spot for those starting out, as the conditions are often manageable for less experienced surfers.

Be aware that the area sees a large number of surfers when the weather is nice, especially in summer, so expect some company. As you head out to surf, keep in mind that this beach caters to everyone, from beginners to longboarders, making it a lively place to catch some waves.
