Torquay Backbeach is a southeast-facing beach that tames southwest swell into easy, rolling rides suited to beginners, longboarders, and just about every kind of craft. It breaks over uneven reef and sand, with rocky formations at both ends. Halfway out toward Point Danger sits Drainoes, a peak that leans toward the lefts; the rights there run boggy, favoured by kites and windsurfers, and are rarely worth a paddle.
When It Works
The beach draws swell from southwest through southeast, with southwest the best match. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft, offering both lefts and rights, and it stays very consistent.
Wind and Tide
Look for northwest offshore wind. The bank works on low and mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is a beginner-friendly wave, and the lineup gets very busy, especially through summer. Expect a strong surf lifesaving club presence at the southwest end.
Access
Facilities are well covered here, with restrooms, showers, camping, a lifeguard, a surf school, and a surf shop. There is a car park with paid parking.
