Tourmaline is a mellow beach break at the end of Tourmaline Street in San Diego, breaking over sand and peeling both left and right. It has long been a gathering place as much as a surf spot, with a relaxed, community feel around the lot and the beach that keeps regulars coming back.
When It Works
The peaks come to life on southwest (SW) swell, though the spot draws anything from south through west (S-W). It works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, so there is a wide window of surfable days. Autumn, winter, and spring bring the most reliable conditions, with November through February the standout stretch, and there are still waves to be found year-round.
Wind and Tide
Look for northeast (NE) offshore wind to clean things up. The waves favor a fuller tide, working best around mid to high tide, and a rising tide is generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is a longboard-and-beginner spot at heart, with gentle, forgiving peaks well suited to fish, funboards, and longboards. Expect a busy lineup when it works, especially through summer, and an atmosphere that can feel a little reserved.
Access
Park for free in the car park at the end of Tourmaline Street. Restrooms, showers, and lifeguard cover round out an easy, welcoming setup.
