Overview
Tramandaí is a sandy beachbreak with peaks on both sides of the pier, and being the closest beach to Porto Alegre, it pulls in plenty of surfers. Lefts and rights are both on offer, and on a west wind day the peaks can throw a few barrels. When you want an alternative, the rivermouth at Barra de Imbé sometimes serves up peelers, though it's a fickle option.
When It Works
The beach draws swell from east through south, with east swell the best match. It's usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft and picks up waves consistently, so there's usually something worth checking.
Wind and Tide
Look for northwest offshore wind. The sandbanks can work through most of the tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
The waves here suit beginners, and with a mix of local and city surfers in the water, expect a busy lineup. There can be some hassle on the best peaks, but the beach is wide enough that there's room to find your own space.
Access
Facilities are good: restrooms, showers, a lifeguard, a surf school, and a surf shop. You can use the car park with free parking, or pull up roadside.
