Overview
Umegahama Rivermouth is a sand-bottomed river mouth that fires off right-handers, pinwheeling over the groomed sandbars when it's on. More beachbreak peaks are spread up the long beach toward Shoojiun, so there's room to find your own bank when it's working.
When It Works
The rivermouth draws swell from east to south (E-S), with southeast (SE) the best match for those pinwheeling rights. It's usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft. Consistency is moderate, so quality days come together often enough without being a sure thing, but when a clean SE swell lines up over the sandbars the rights can be superb.
Wind and Tide
Look for west (W) offshore wind to groom it clean. It works through mid and high tide, and a rising tide is the better call, with the right-handers at their best on the push toward high.
Local Tips
This is an expert-level wave, and it pulls a busy lineup of the area's best local surfers on the days it turns on. If you're feeling energetic during a flat spell, Cape Toi is worth the scout, with hundreds of wild horses roaming and a range of reefbreaks facing different exposures.
Access
There are restrooms on hand, and parking is easy, with a car park offering free parking alongside paid and roadside options.
