Overview
Unstad Left is a left-hand point that peels over an uneven, rocky reef, throwing out long lefthanders when the swell wraps onto the shelf. It is a technical wave, mixing crumbling sections with the odd barrel, and it demands speed and nerve. This is an experts-only setup.
When It Works
Unstad Left draws swell from southwest through west, with southwest (SW) the direction that lights it up as the swell wraps onto the rocky shelf. It works from 1.2 m / 4 ft to 4.6 m / 15 ft. Consistency can be patchy, so it takes some patience to catch it on, but the long lefts reward the wait when the setup lines up.
Wind and Tide
Look for southeast (SE) offshore wind. The 800m mountain looming over the break can funnel the wind offshore, which helps clean things up. The wave works on low and mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
Expect a moderately busy lineup when it is working. This is strictly a wave for experts, so come with the speed and commitment it takes to make the sections.
Access
Entry and exit are tricky over the boulder-strewn rocky shelf, so time your paddle out carefully. Access is shared with Unstad Right just around the bay. On land you will find restrooms, showers, camping, a surf school, and a surf shop, plus a car park with free parking and roadside parking.
