Vaiaau is a rare right-hander that reels off Motu Toamarau over live coral. When it turns on, it peels unmercifully fast, favouring surfers who can stay out in front of a racing wall.
When It Works
Vaiaau draws swell from the southwest through northwest and comes into its own on a west (W) swell, which lines the reef up best. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft, so it needs a bit of size to get peeling without overwhelming the reef.
Wind and Tide
Look for an east (E) offshore wind to groom the wall. The reef works through most of the tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
Between its speed and the live coral underneath, Vaiaau is strictly an expert-level wave.
