Overview
Vairao is one of the world's best left-handers, tucked into Tapuehara Pass on the Iti Peninsula. The take-off is steep, fast, and barreling, then opens into a flawless looping wall that runs for several hundred yards along the reef. Before the wave curves into the pass, a final bowl section stands up over shallow coral. It's often overshadowed by Teahupo'o just down the coast, and while it's less intense than its famous neighbor, it still packs real power.
When It Works
The reef draws swell from southwest through southeast (SW-SE), with south (S) swell the best match. It's usable from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft, and it's at its best through autumn and winter, roughly March to September. It's only moderately consistent, so it won't fire on every swell, but when it lines up the quality is excellent. On bigger days you can sit deeper in the final bowl and pick off wide sets if you'd rather skip the breakneck take-off.
Wind and Tide
Look for northeast (NE) offshore wind to clean it up. The reef works across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is an expert-level wave best suited to a shortboard, rewarding confident surfing through the fast barrel and long wall. The lineup stays quiet and can feel a little reserved.
Access
Getting out means a boat ride or a paddle of around 20 minutes from shore, and it's a long haul of close to 2 km. Expect strong rips along the way, and keep the shallow coral reef in mind throughout.
