Overview
Van Staden's Mouth is a rivermouth beachbreak tucked inside the scenic Van Stadens nature reserve, on the way to Port Elizabeth. The waves break over sand and peel both left and right.
When It Works
The beachbreak draws swell from east through south to southwest, with south swell the best match. It's usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft, giving you a fair working range to find a rideable day.
Wind and Tide
Wind makes or breaks this one. The rivermouth tends to blow out completely unless the wind swings northerly, so look for a northeast offshore breeze to clean things up. It can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is an approachable, beginner-friendly beachbreak. Do keep in mind there has been a non-fatal great white shark attack along this stretch of coast.
