Overview
Texel Paal 17 is a sand-bottomed beach break out on the Wadden Islands, where open, unstabilised beaches and constantly shifting sandbanks shape the waves. It picks up the lion's share of any west-to-north swell, so it tends to run a few feet bigger, more powerful and windier than the mainland. With no jetties to hold the banks in place, it leans on well-groomed sandbars and offshore wind to come to life, and when it does it serves up both lefts and rights.
When It Works
The bank draws swell from southwest through north and is at its best on a northwest swell. It works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, leaving room across both small and solid days. Consistency is moderate, and the sandbanks need to be groomed into shape before the spot really delivers.
Wind and Tide
Look for a southeast offshore wind to clean things up. The beach can work through low, mid and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call. Expect big tides and strong currents here, so keep an eye on the water movement.
Local Tips
