Overview
Wainjapu is a left-hand reef break wrapping along an extensive fringing reef, and it holds long, makeable lefts as long as there isn't too much west in the swell. There are potentially good rights on the other side of the bay, and the village itself is home to some impressive megaliths.
When It Works
The reef picks up swell from southwest through west, and southwest is the direction that lines it up best. Too much west in the swell is what shuts the lefts down, so favour the swells sitting on the southern end of that window. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3 m / 10 ft, which leaves room for everything from a fun waist-high day to solid overhead surf.
Wind and Tide
Look for northeast offshore wind to groom the reef. It can work through most of the tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
The wave breaks over uneven reef, so it suits surfers with a bit of experience behind them. Intermediate surfers will get the most out of it.
