Overview
Waipoua Reefs is an isolated right-hand reef break up the Kauri Coast, well past Dargaville, where gnarly, challenging waves greet small groups of experts. It breaks over uneven reef and sand.
When It Works
The reef draws swell from southwest through northwest, with southwest (SW) the best match. It's usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft, and it holds a good, consistent standard when the swell lines up.
Wind and Tide
Look for northeast (NE) offshore wind. The reef works through mid and high tide, with a rising tide the better call.
Local Tips
This is an experts-only wave, best left to surfers who are comfortable in serious, powerful surf. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's on.
Access
Getting here is a mission. Reaching the reef means a roughly one-hour hike south from Waimamaku, or picking through a maze of forestry tracks that make it genuinely hard to find. West coast access is a real drag, with 4WD forestry trails often gated and locked.
