Waiwhakaiho Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Waiwhakaiho is a river mouth break that fires over sand at the mouth of the Waiwhakaiho River. It's one of the standout waves in the area, serving up rights that peel back into the river flow and longer lefts that spin up the beach. It also picks up more swell than nearby Fitzroy, so it can be working when other spots stay quiet.

When It Works

The break draws swell from southwest through north, with southwest swell the best match. It works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, and as a consistent spot it turns on often.

Wind and Tide

Look for a southeast offshore wind to clean it up. The cultured sandbars at the rivermouth can be excellent on higher water, working through mid and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.

Local Tips

This is an intermediate wave, and it gets busy whenever it's working, so expect a full lineup and bring your manners.

Access

From New Plymouth city centre, head east on Devon Street East, then continue straight onto Clemow Road, following it past the golf course and lake to the breakwater at the eastern end of Fitzroy Beach. From there it's a paddle across the Waiwhakaiho River to the eastern side of the mouth. Alternatively, head to Fitzroy Beach and walk the coastal walkway to the eastern end, then cross the river. There's a car park, plus restrooms and camping.
