Watergate Bay Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Watergate Bay is a consistent beachbreak running for two miles of sand just north of Newquay. Shifting banks throw up both lefts and rights, from short punchy rides to long open walls, and there's plenty of room to spread out along the length of the beach. It's a popular contest venue and was long seen as a quieter alternative to Fistral, though it has grown busier in recent years. The waves here won't blow you away, but the space and reliability make it a solid option.

When It Works

Watergate draws swell from southwest through northwest, with southwest the best match. It's usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 3 m / 10 ft, running roughly from thigh high to overhead. Being a consistent break, it picks up plenty of swell and works year round, with autumn, roughly September through November, the standout window. At size it gets heavier and hollower as the rips ramp up, and paddling can be hard work in bigger swells.

Wind and Tide

Look for east offshore wind, with a workable window that stretches into the southeast. It breaks across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call. Keep an eye on the tide, though, because the beach shrinks away at high and you can get cut off as the water pushes up to the cliffs.

Local Tips

This is a friendly, beginner-friendly beachbreak that suits just about any board, from shortboards and fish to funboards, longboards, SUPs, and bodyboards. Expect a moderately busy lineup with a somewhat reserved atmosphere, and count on bigger crowds in summer and on weekends. The middle of the beach fills up near the access, so a short walk north or south usually turns up a quieter peak.

Access

A couple of car parks sit above the beach with easy access, and parking is paid. The facilities are excellent, with restrooms, showers, camping, a surf school, a surf shop, and lifeguard cover.
