Whaler Island is a semi-hollow, right-hand reef that breaks over uneven rock just outside the Crescent City Harbor South Jetty.
When It Works
The reef pulls in swell from south to north and really needs a medium to large winter swell to switch on. It works from 1.2 m / 4 ft to 3 m / 10 ft, so wait for some genuine size before you paddle out.
Wind and Tide
An east offshore wind grooms the reef cleanest. It favours low tide and will hold through mid tide as well, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
The take-off zone is small and the lineup has a protective local crew, so take your time to read the pecking order before dropping in.
