Whitsand Bay surf guide

Whitsand Bay is a long stretch of beach located on the south coast of Cornwall, England. It offers around 7 kilometers of beachbreak peaks, making it big enough for surfers to have their own space. It can get busy, especially with surfers coming from Plymouth, but you can usually find a quieter spot if you're willing to explore. Getting to the beach can be tricky in some areas due to military restrictions, so it's good to know your access points. The main access is from Tregantle, but there are also other entry points along the length of the beach. Just keep in mind that there’s no parking right by the beach.

The waves at Whitsand Bay work best with a south-west swell, but you can also find some action with south-east and west swells. The beachbreak handles swell sizes starting from about 2 feet (0.6 meters), and both left and right waves are available depending on the conditions. The best time to surf here is during low to mid or even high tides. If the wind is coming from the north-east, it sets up pretty well, making for decent sessions.

Aside from the surf, it's worth noting that the beach's sandy bottom makes it a bit more forgiving than rocky spots. With the variety in peaks, you can usually find somewhere to suit your level, whether you’re just starting out or looking for a bit of challenge. Just be mindful of the conditions and choose a peak that fits your skills.
