Whitsand Bay surf guide

Whitsand Bay is a nearly 4-mile long stretch of sand located near Plymouth, popular among surfers when a decent swell comes in from the west. Despite its popularity, it's often possible to find some space to yourself, especially at low tide when the beach really opens up. Good banks can usually be found around Boiler Beach and Freathy Rocks, making it a reliable choice for those looking to catch some waves. Keep in mind that access to areas around Tregantle is limited due to military regulations, and it’s closed off when red flags are flying. Parking can be a bit challenging, with only a few small lots available, particularly at Tregantle.

The surf at Whitsand Bay offers a mix of beach breaks with both right and left waves, suitable for surfers of varying skill levels, from beginners to intermediates. The spot handles swell sizes between 3 feet (about 1 meter) and 7 feet (around 2.1 meters), and works best with swells from the southwest to west-southwest. The ideal conditions are found at low to mid tide, especially when the wind is blowing from the northeast or north-north-east. It’s worth noting that paddling can become a bit tricky and rippy when the surf picks up, so be prepared for that.

Whitsand Bay is more than just a surf spot; it has a pretty laid-back vibe and generally allows surfers to spread out, even when it’s busy. The main season for good waves is between September and February, so if you’re looking to catch the bigger swells that come into the Channel, that’s when to go. Just remember to watch out for rocks at high tide and to be cautious on the access trails, which can be steep and a bit sketchy.
