Overview
Wijk Aan Zee/Noordpier is the premier spot closest to Amsterdam, a sand-bottom break sitting right next to a huge harbour jetty. The setting is starkly industrial, with a steel mill and commercial shipping behind the beach, and water quality can be dubious.
When It Works
It's a left that comes to life in a northwest swell, when solid walls form along the beach. The jetty also offers some wind shelter in southwest conditions, though those tend to be weaker and more disorganised. It draws swell from southwest through north (SW-N), with northwest (NW) the best direction, and it's usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft. Being moderately consistent, it holds waves long after the summer crowds have left.
Wind and Tide
The offshore wind blows from the east (E), though onshore, messy conditions are more the norm here. For tide, aim for mid tide on the incoming; a rising tide is generally the better call, and high tide tends to push too much water onto the break.
Local Tips
This is a beginner-friendly wave, but expect a busy lineup when it works, especially through summer. Watch for rips closer to the jetty, and share the water with plenty of windsurfers and kiters.
Access
Facilities are well covered: restrooms, showers, camping, a lifeguard, a surf school and a surf shop. There's a car park with both free and paid parking. In winter the beach huts and surf club are gone, so it gets noticeably quieter.
