Woljeung is a sand-bottomed beachbreak that catches more swell than just about anywhere on the north coast. It breaks both left and right, and the shorefront is lined with cafes and an easygoing tourist buzz.
When It Works
The bank draws swell from the northeast through east (NE-E), and it comes together best on a northeast (NE) swell. It works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft, so there is room for small days as well as bigger winter pulses. Waves can be somewhat inconsistent, and the beach is usually flat outside the winter months. Winter is when the real swell shows up; through summer you are mostly looking at fluky windslop, which means a wetsuit choice that swings from thick winter rubber to light summer kit.
Wind and Tide
Look for a southwest (SW) offshore wind to clean things up. Woljeung can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
The gentle beachbreak shape makes this a friendly spot for beginners finding their feet. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it is working.
Access
There is plenty on hand at the beach, with restrooms, showers, and a campground close by. A lifeguard watches the water and there is a surf school for anyone wanting a lesson.
