Yoff Island is a left-hand reef break that peels over an uneven reef off the coast. It comes into its own in bigger north swells, when the long left down the island really switches on. There's also a wind-exposed right about a five-minute paddle to the west that can run long and turn out excellent when it lines up.
When It Works
The left draws swell from southwest through north, with northwest the best match, and stands up best when a solid north swell is running. It's usable from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, so you want some size on it before making the trip. Expect moderately consistent surf: not every day, but reliable enough to be worth watching when the swell fills in.
Wind and Tide
Look for south offshore wind, which grooms the left nicely. It can work across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call. On the bigger north-swell days the left holds up with any south wind and medium tides.
Local Tips
This one suits intermediate surfers comfortable reading a reef and a longer paddle. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's working.
Access
Getting out takes commitment: it's about a ten-minute paddle to the outside left from the beach. Watch for the rocks at lower tides, and keep an eye out for fishing boats, which use the island as a safe anchorage.
