Overview
Zancudo is a sand-bottomed beach break tucked far inside the Golfo Dulce, right by a large rivermouth. It is better known for great fishing than for surfing, but the mellow waves and reasonably priced beachfront accommodation make it a comfortable place for new surfers to log some water time.
When It Works
The beach pulls in swell from south through southwest, with southwest the direction to hope for. It is usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, though the break is somewhat inconsistent, so you really want size and direction lining up before you commit. When they do, both lefts and rights are on offer: long left-hand sandbars build up near the rivermouth, while the southern end of the beach tends to see more size. For a quieter alternative to the crowds at Pavones, Playa Pilon at the far southern end faces a few left points at Rancho del Mar and Punta Salea that often line up almost as well when the southwest swell is really pumping.
Wind and Tide
Look for an east offshore wind. The wave is generally small and soft at high tide, which keeps it friendly for beginners, while low tide gets suckier with shorter, dumpy sections up to a little overhead. Across the board, a rising tide is the better call.
Local Tips
This is an easygoing beginner wave, so it is a good place to find your feet. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it is working.
Access
There is camping close by, and parking is free, either roadside or nearby.
